Become a Foster Guardian
Foster guardians are compassionate people who open their hearts and homes to animals in need. By providing temporary care in a safe, loving environment, foster families give vulnerable animals the time they need to grow stronger, heal, and prepare for adoption.
Some animals may only need a foster home for a few days, while others may stay for several weeks or months, depending on their individual needs. Every foster home becomes an extension of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and plays a vital role in helping animals get the best possible start on their journey to a forever home.
Foster Opportunities
We are regularly looking for foster guardians for:
- Neonatal (newborn) kittens and puppies requiring bottle feeding
- Weaned puppies and kittens that are too young for adoption
- Senior animals in hospice care
- Animals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery
- Animals needing additional socialization and human interaction
How to Become a Foster Guardian
Step 1: Complete an Online Application
Create a profile in Better Impact, our volunteer management system, and complete the Foster Guardian application.
Step 2: Complete the Onboarding Process
All foster guardians 16 years of age and older are required to complete a background check. During onboarding, you will also be asked to provide:
- Government-issued photo ID
- Signed waivers
- A current photo
Step 3: Attend Foster Orientation
After completing orientation, you’ll be approved to foster and matched with an animal whose needs fit your home and experience.
